Pet Friendly Vacations

How To Plan A Pet Friendly Vacation

Taking your pet on vacation with you is a much better option than keeping them locked up in a kennel or asking a friend or neighbor to visit every day to care for them. It is possible to have a pet friendly vacation and with a few simple considerations you can have an excellent pet friendly vacation.

Choosing A Location

When planning a pet friendly vacation, the first thing you need to do is consider your vacation spot. If you are going to stay at a campground don’t assume that all areas are open to pets. There may be restrictions such as leash laws at some national and local parks that require you to keep your pets on leashes at all times.

It is important to check all campground regulations before you choose a place to vacation.

On the other hand, you will need to make sure a hotel or a motel is pet friendly before vacationing there. You likely won’t want to stay in a hotel or motel if you have a dog that barks, chews or causes a disturbance often. Even a pet friendly hotel or motel will ask you to leave if their property is destroyed or if the other guests are disturbed.

In addition, your deposit probably won’t be refunded and you will lose a lot of money. Even with a well behaved pet, you likely won’t get your deposit back since they may need to use it to treat for parasites such as fleas and any addition cleaning that is required.

A excellent option for those who need a pet friendly vacation can be to stay at a relatives or friends house. Although it is a good idea to check with them in advance to see if they have a fenced yard or kennel. If they have other pets,  you will need to make sure the animals with interact together otherwise your vacation may end up being cut short.

If you are traveling out of state or out of country, it is a good idea to check with your veterinarian about any additional vaccinations or treatments that may be required in order to have a pet friendly vacation. If you are traveling to areas with heartworms or ticks, then you will likely need to have these treatments done before traveling.

It is also a good idea to get a booster shot for kennel cough before traveling, especially if you are going to be taking your dog to a place where there are other dogs.
